Mill Creek Camp 64
Total Milage Aprox 4.1Miles
Drove from Greensboro to Bryson City NC. Stopped and had lunch then headed to the trailhead at the end of Lakeview Drive. Decided to drive back a little bit...my thinking was one of the two parking areas before the end was tje actual trailhead for the Noland Creek / Benton MacKaye Trails....it was two back...right before a bridge over Noland Creek.
Started hiking at around 2:20 (camera time off by 45 min slow). walked too fast...got to camp, set up, and now writing this at 4:43.
Nice hike. Trail mostly old loging roads so not to hard and all along Noland Cr so very nice...sounds of running water most of the time.
only issues with my right leg, on the lower leg, side. The muscle is very tight and I cant seem to stretch it out.
Beautiful weather right now...sunny, good breeze.
so far only two horses, two hikers and a family out fishing the creek....oh and lots of natts.
Now it is 7:40pm. Dinner was mac & cheese with spam (although I only cooked half the macaroni). Stovs still not quite right...just doesnt seem to be putting out as much heat as iit use to.
Did put the cell phone on the charger will it was in the sun charging. cell phone shows fully chared, almost full on x-dragon.
now in tent...still no company and it is getting close to dusk. should get lots of sleep....no people and the sound of the creek not 15 yards from my tent.
wow! woken up by a flashing light by the tent...looked out...fireflies. Dozens of them all flashing in sequence. then I looked up. Stars, more than I have seen in years and years. got dressed and got out of the tent and just soked it in! Mars, just about at its closest to earth in years, was the brightest thing in the sky I could see, but was unmiskakeabe due to its redish color. natures light show! wow!
Lower Forney Camp 74
Total Milage Aprox 9.8 Miles
woke up a few times during the night because I was cold. I am glad I ordered that new sleeping bag for the AT. Had to put on the light poly-pew long-john tops I brought, which did help with the cold.
woke up around 5am but just didnt want to get up. think i finally left the tent at around 6:30 or 7am. had breakfast, filled up on water and headed out. as I figured from the map the first section was up, up and more up. thought I was doing ok until I reached the first junction and looked at the time....2.5 miles in 2 hours.
after that junction the trail was a gental downhill all the way to camp 71. stoped there for a break and a soak in the Forney Creek.
rest of the hike to camp was uneventful and mostly downhill so I made great time, getting here around 2:15.
did see a scout group out for a weeklong hike from IL, two fly fisherman and a couple camping at 71.
arrived here to find a huge tarp with a number of camp beds, coolers ect. put my tent up as far away as I could (they are not at camp right now....I hope they are good neigbors).
took yet another soak in the Forrney after ariving. changed, and now sitting here typing.
sore but I can move. right leg issue bothered me all morning, but felt ok after the trail leveled out and even better when going down. feet seem to be ok.
Total Milage Aprox 3.7 Miles
Neighbors were the fly fisherman I saw while hiking and were good neibors.
had a snack of the summer sausage and ritz crackers. no issue finishing the summer sausage in one sitting.
had the asian rice and noodles for dinner...way too strong on the teriaki flavor...but will be ok on the trail.
evening was nice and i slept well, although i did have a headache and was sore all over. took 2 vitimain I's and it did the trick.
the hike out was uneventful except for having though a tunnel. never hiked a tunnel before, it was weird just seeing a spot of light and walking toward it and watching the light get bigger and bigger. Every footstep echoing along the way. it was just weird.
got back to the car before 10am then drove to Deep Creek for a shower and pick up t-shirt. I still love that place...it is so homey.
